Hilton "Stop Clicking Around" Lessons

What Hilton's 2016 direct booking campaign did, what its own filings show, and what hotels without a chain budget can borrow from it.

BookingWhizz·January 24, 2026

In February 2016, Hilton launched “Stop Clicking Around”, a marketing campaign that told travellers, in remarkably direct terms, to stop shopping around and book directly with Hilton instead. Hilton described it as the largest campaign in the company's 97 year history. The offer behind it was simple: Hilton HHonors members who booked direct got an exclusive discount on room rates at more than 4,500 hotels, plus the ability to choose their own room from a digital floor plan (Hilton launch release, February 2016). It was a public bet on the direct channel.

What followed is set out in Hilton's own filings, covered in the results section below. The point for this article is simpler: a chain chose to tell guests, in public, why booking direct was the better choice.

For independent hotels, the question is not whether Hilton's approach made sense. The question is what can be adapted without a global chain's marketing budget.

What Hilton Actually Did

The campaign, and the direct offer behind it, had four components, each reinforcing the others.

1. Price Guarantee With Teeth. Hilton backs its direct rate with a Price Match Guarantee. Under its current terms (claims made on or after 20 August 2026), if a guest finds a lower qualifying rate elsewhere, Hilton says it will “match the lower rate and give you an additional 25% off the room rate for your stay” (Hilton Price Match Guarantee). It takes away a common reason guests leave a hotel website: the belief that intermediaries offer better deals.

Independent hotels can apply the same principle without discounting. PriceMatch detects when Booking.com undercuts your direct rate and shows the guest a matched price on your website, so they have no reason to leave and compare. The psychology is the same as Hilton's: remove the price objection.

2. Member-Only Pricing. At the centre of the 2016 campaign was an exclusive discount for HHonors members who booked direct. This created a two-layer strategy: parity for the general public, plus a member rate for loyalty members. It was both a direct booking incentive and a loyalty enrolment tool.

This is directly replicable. A member rate on direct bookings can cost less than the commission an OTA would take on the same booking. As analysed in our direct booking incentives guide, even a modest member rate gives guests a reason to choose the direct channel.

3. Room Selection as a Differentiator. Hilton gave HHonors members who booked direct the ability to choose their own room from a digital floor plan, and to use a Digital Key. This addressed a genuine guest desire (corner room, high floor, away from the lift) and turned a technology feature into a reason to book direct.

4. Massive Brand Advertising. Hilton put the largest campaign in its history behind the message. The launch release framed the point plainly: booking direct “doesn't require extensive searching and price checking”.

The Results

Hilton's annual reports give the clearest public picture of what happened next:

  • Approximately 51 million HHonors members at the end of 2015 (Hilton 10-K, 2015)
  • Approximately 60 million members at the end of 2016 (Hilton 10-K, 2016)
  • Member share of system-wide occupancy of approximately 52 percent in 2015 and approximately 56 percent in 2016

Hilton's filings do not attribute these movements to one campaign, and neither should we. Hilton was also not alone. Marriott had started its own “It Pays to Book Direct” message in 2015 and launched Marriott Rewards Member Rates in April 2016 (Marriott release, March 2016). The large chains were making the same argument to guests at the same time.

Revenue Impact

Hilton HHonors grew from approximately 51 million members at the end of 2015 to approximately 60 million at the end of 2016, when members accounted for approximately 56 percent of system-wide occupancy (Hilton 10-K filings). The core tactics, price matching, member-only rates and direct-only perks, are within reach of independent hotels without a chain's advertising budget.

What Independent Hotels Can Replicate

Strip away the national advertising, and Hilton's strategy rests on three pillars that any hotel can build on:

Pillar 1: Eliminate the Price Objection. Many guests believe OTAs are cheaper. Whether or not that is true, the perception drives behaviour. Automated price matching removes this objection in real time. When a visitor lands on your website and sees that your direct rate matches the OTA, a key reason to leave disappears. Our deep dive into the hidden costs of OTA dependency looks at what this perception costs independent properties.

Pillar 2: Make Direct Booking Worth Registering For. Hilton tied loyalty enrolment to the booking act. You do not need a complex programme to start; a simple “Book Direct, Get More” proposition works. Free breakfast, guaranteed late checkout, complimentary minibar, or a member rate. The goal is to make the guest feel that booking direct was a smarter choice, not just an equivalent one.

Pillar 3: Create Channel-Exclusive Benefits. Hilton tied room selection to booking direct. Independent hotels can do the same: offer room preference guarantees, early check-in, or complimentary upgrades exclusively to direct bookers. These are benefits the hotel controls, because the hotel runs the guest experience.

The Budget Reality

Hilton put the largest campaign in its history behind one message: book direct. Most hotels do not have that budget. But here is what the campaign showed: when hotels give guests a genuine reason to book direct, the message is worth making. The advertising created awareness; the product had to deliver the booking.

For independent hotels, the “advertising” happens at the moment of truth: when a guest is on your website, comparing your price to Booking.com in another tab. That is where real-time price matching, a Booking Engine with loyalty built in, and direct booking incentives do the work that Hilton's TV ads did at scale.

The lesson from “Stop Clicking Around” is not that you need a national campaign. It is that guests will book direct when you remove the reasons not to. Price parity, instant value, and channel-exclusive benefits are not strategies that require a global brand. They are strategies that require the right tools and a clear commitment to the direct channel.
